Hat Trick
What's 'newsworthy' about your business?

Editors receive hundreds of press releases and story ideas every day from businesses just like yours. So how do you cut through the clutter and land on the front page?

To an editor, an item is newsworthy if he/she feels the readers, listeners or viewers will find it interesting and/or useful.

To uncover the newsworthiness in your business, think about your target customer or the target reader of a particular publication. Put yourself in his or her shoes. What would make you excited? Intrigued? Provoked? Now, think about how your business provides some type of service, product or information that feeds into these reactions.

In many cases, the best story angle is one that ties your service or product with a current event or news story. An editor is more likely to run a story about a new whiz bang snow shovel the day after a winter storm strikes than in the heat of July.
