Hat Trick
Online Tools: Work Smarter, Not Harder

Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, once said, “The advance of technology is based on making it fit in so that you don't really even notice it, so it's part of everyday life.” Today, using computers or visiting cyberspace is part of our daily activity.

We use e-mail to communicate, the Internet to read news or do research and blogs and podcasts for news, entertainment and even education.

Two of today’s most popular online tools are Rich Site Summary feeds and blogs. Both are increasing in popularity by the minute.

You probably spend a lot of time scouring the Web every day. One way to save time is to use RSS feeds or news aggregators. These programs check your favorite sites for updated content and alert you when there is something new to read.

According to John Gifford, Communications and Public Relations Manager at Accord HR, RSS programs help you to work smarter, not harder.

Gifford said, “These RSS programs are tools that are consistent with this belief of mine (to work smarter, not harder). When I check in to retrieve my feeds, I can quickly scan the headlines and updates from these many sites, thereby keeping abreast of current news and trends, yet doing it in a way that's convenient for me.”

Blogging is another tool that is being used more frequently by companies and organizations. Ed Schipul, chief executive officer of Houston-based Schipul – The Web Marketing Company, challenged organizations to use blogs to communicate when he spoke at the Oklahoma City Chapter of Public Relation Society of America’s Professional Development Day.

“We need you online,” Schipul said. “It’s a conversation. You have a voice.”

Schipul went on to say that using tools like blogs can not only enhance an organization’s existing marketing efforts but also increase corporate transparency to avoid Enron-like situations in the future.
