Murrell, Hall, McIntosh & Co., PLLP
Employee recognition event
Background:
Murrell, Hall, McIntosh, & Co., PLLP, is one of the largest CPA firms in Oklahoma City with offices in the metro and in Norman. Each year, MHM holds a State of the Firm Meeting to recognize outstanding employees and welcome new ones.
This year, MHM wanted to provide a more exciting, inviting atmosphere to its employees so the event would be something they wanted to attend instead of had to attend. The firm also wanted to show its employees some appreciation in the week leading up to the event.
20 Hats suggested that MHM have a speaker at the event, so MHM invited Jack Mildren, former Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma and University of Oklahoma quarterback, to speak. 20 Hats set about to plan a week of activities and theme for the event that complemented Mildren as the speaker. With OSU and OU basketball under way and the winter Olympics getting ready to begin, we decided on a sports theme.
Objectives
To develop a theme for the week and event that capitalized on the current “Count on MHM” theme
To determine a community organization MHM could support through a fund-raiser the week prior to the event
To develop a PowerPoint presentation to show as employees entered the event
To develop fun activities throughout the week to encourage employee participation in the event and positive employee attitudes
Tactics:
- Developed a poster that was hung around the office highlighting the week's events
- Suggested an employee “thank you” breakfast the Monday before the event
- Developed an Oklahoma athlete quiz that employees filled out for a chance to win gift certificates
- Helped develop a raffle fund-raiser in which employees bought chances to win OU and OSU memorabilia to raise money for Special Olympics
- Prepared fun fact e-mails about Jack Mildren that were sent out every day in the week before the event
- Coordinated with Sherwood Taylor, a Special Olympics representative, to speak at the event about Special Olympics
- Prepared an e-mail about Special Olympics and Sherwood Taylor’s involvement that was sent out several days before the event
- Developed a PowerPoint presentation highlighting Oklahoma athletes that was shown as employees entered the event
Evaluation:
- The fund-raiser for Special Olympics raised over $2,000
- MHM committed to providing funds and volunteers to Special Olympics for the next year
- MHM employees and partners gave 20 Hats extremely positive feedback about the event, saying it was more enjoyable than in years past
